ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

The Moscow Museum of Modern Art presents Stitches, Hooks and Red Thread, a new exhibition within the Collection. Vantage Point programme opening at the Educational Centre. The project offers a curatorial exploration of clothing and its related themes in 20th- and early 21st-century art based on the MMOMA collection.

Every word in the title can be understood both literally and metaphorically. Clothing runs like a red thread through art history, and each work in the exhibition is another stitch, a contribution to a pattern woven from individual artistic voices. The exhibition design adopts the logic of an open wardrobe, echoing the well-known open storage display concept. Visitors are invited to open the door of an imaginary closet and encounter works by celebrated contemporary artists.

More than fifty works are on view, spanning painting, graphics, photography, video, objects, and installation, each inviting a fresh perspective on familiar wardrobe items. From early medieval painting to contemporary installation, clothing has consistently served as a marker of identity and social standing. Artists carry a remarkable ‘baggage’ of shawls, hats, jackets, padded coats, T-shirts, socks, and more across the centuries, using these details as entry points into time and the human condition.

About the programme

Collection. Vantage Point is a long-term exhibition initiative developed specifically for the MMOMA Educational Centre. Complementing the museum's large-scale thematic exhibitions, it offers a more intimate, focused, and dynamic approach to researching and exhibiting the collection.

The programme encompasses monographic, archival, and interdisciplinary projects. These laboratory-like exhibitions focus on a segment of the Museum’s collection and often turn to private or understudied artistic subjects, testing new curatorial formats and expanding our understanding of 20th- and 21st-century Russian art. The Museum's collection serves as a rich vantage point for conversations about art, history, science, and culture.

Launched in late 2017, the programme is directed by the curatorial staff of MMOMA's Research Department and was initiated by Andrey Egorov and Anna Harutyunyan.
