...ONE ARTSAPIENS ID

About the exibition
Within the framework of the Quest. Research programme, the Moscow Museum of Modern Art presents a new exhibition project by Anna Kabirova entitled ...ONE ARTSAPIENS ID that focuses on the phenomenon of synaesthesia, a condition that makes one kind of sensory stimuli overlap with a different sensory experience. The exhibition is organized with the participation of the Vaults Centre for Artistic Production of the GES-2 House of Culture.
A unique programme designed specifically for the project converted seven primary colours into sound waves. These audio signals were then transformed into digital sculptures produced with 3D printing. Anna Kabirova also created a system that can turn any colour into a fragrance. Such manipulations supplemented visual information about colours with auditory, tactile and olfactory inputs.
To recreate the experience of synaesthesia, the produced sensory models of colours red, yellow and blue were presented to Anna while her brain activity was recorded with an electroencephalogram (EEG). The research project was conducted at the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) at the Mikhail Lebedev Centre for Neurobiology and Neurorehabilitation. The resulting EEG data was analysed at the laboratory of smart signal and image processing and converted into diagrams and graphs. This EEG study shows how a person responds to multisensory stimulation. For example, it allows to track the artist's reaction to colours while all her sensory channels are simultaneously active, and to compare her reaction with the experience of a proven synaesthete.
The exhibition ...ONE ARTSAPIENS ID invites the audience to discover synaesthesia. The project presents seven audio-olfactory installations, each of which is interactive and simultaneously engages the visual, tactile, olfactory and auditory perception of seven different colours. All exhibits are monochrome, which makes the usual visual perception of colour impossible and allows to explore various channels of communication without relying on standard patterns.
By transforming abstract concepts such as colour into sensations, Anna creates intuitive forms of communication that can foster a deep and direct perception of reality.
Anna Kabirova's exhibition ... ONE ARTSAPIENS ID continues the Quest. Research programme, that focuses on the exchange between science and art. The programme’s exhibitions aim to explore the phenomenon of artistic research as a method. The first exhibition within the framework of the project is Alina Fedotova’s Oasis, which shows that knowledge becomes much more complete if there is no tension between the scientific perspective and artistic perception. The second solo exhibition consistently demonstrates different approaches to data collection, its artistic interpretation and representation.
The extensive public programme that accompanies each of the exhibitions examines how humankind has historically accumulated knowledge about the world, what science can contribute to art and vice versa. Lecture series and public talks discuss the concept of research and its legitimacy in art production.
Anna Kabirova

Anna's works have been exhibited in MMOMA (Moscow, Russia), Miroglio Museum (Alba, Italy), Roma First Gallery (Rome, Italy), Brera Museum (Milan, Italy).
The Vaults Centre for Artistic Production
Hosts eight workshops equipped to experiment with wood, metal, plastic, ceramics, textiles and other materials. This space where artists and collectives can work on their projects is in close proximity to the GES-2 House of Culture. The Vaults are open for anyone, not only professionals: free mediation tours and workshops are regularly held here.
About the partnership programme
An important mission of the Moscow Museum of Modern Art is to support and encourage creative initiatives by artists and curators of the new generation, to enable their public expression and, therefore, to develop the Russian contemporary art scene. Following this mission, MMOMA and the Vaults Centre for Artistic Production, which shares similar goals, have announced a partnership programme. At the Vaults, artists work on their projects, learn and experiment with various technologies and media. The MMOMA expert council then selects artists that are invited to present their works at one of Moscow’s central exhibition venues. Thus, the partnership programme of the Moscow Museum of Modern Art and the Vaults Centre for Artistic Production helps emerging artists go all the way from an idea or a concept, to producing the artwork and presenting it to the public at one of the museum sites.
*ColLab is a continuous workshop programme at the Vaults Centre for Artistic Production. Every year, an expert jury selects 10 projects to be produced at the Vaults, with the grant covering all the materials needed for production.
