Nikolay Shumakov. Singularity
10/1 GOGOLEVSKY
About the exhibition
The Moscow Museum of Modern Art presents the exhibition Singularity, timed to the anniversary of Nikolay Shumakov, People's Architect of the Russian Federation.
The project comprehensively presents all facets of Nikolay Shumakov’s talent. The works will be grouped by genres: architecture, painting, and sculpture. These exhibits are the product of almost half a century of continuous, daily work, venturous impulses, and an ironic worldview.
The Architecture section showcases Shumakov’s urban planning projects which have shaped today’s landscape of the Russian capital: from the Moscow Metro and the Vnukovo Airport complex to the delicate outlines of the Zhivopisny Bridge in Khoroshevo-Mnevniki.
The most spectacular part of the Painting section are portraits of the artist's friends and acquaintances, with a lot of famous culture professionals and public figures that the audience will find familiar. They include animator Yuri Norstein, People's Artist of the Russian Federation Vladimir Mashkov, sculptor Alexander Rukavishnikov, singer and composer Peter Nalitch, among others. However, the artist does not settle for the portrait genre exclusively, and the show will be complemented by interior motifs, still lifes, as well as variations of iconographic compositions. Shumakov draws inspiration from them and finds new design solutions that evolve into future architectural projects.
The most unconventional section of the exhibition is Sculpture: Shumakov's experiments with this art form will be presented to the public for the first time.
The show will feature his animalistic objects which merge the images from the animal world and urban motifs. The show will be complemented by Nikolay Shumakov's graphic and digital works, with more than 100 exhibits in total. The project will include publishing an album with photographs of Shumakov’s architectural projects and paintings.
