«ASSA»

This work from the MMOMA collection was created by Timur Novikov for the poster of Sergey Soloviev’s movie “ASSA”. A number of “unofficial” artists took part in the shooting of the film, Viktor Tsoi’s musical group “Kino” and Sergey Kuryokhin’s ensemble “Pop Mekhanika” among them. Premiere of the “ASSA” movie in 1988 became one of the emblematic events on the route of soviet culture’s gradual exit from the underground. It is exceptional for a poster that the work is executed in a technique of applique on fabric that was favored by the artist. Despite the fact that this work is a bright satire on the life of a creative being in conditions of severe censorship, Novikov with his inherent humor represents himself and other participants of the group from Soloviev’s movie as reckless and optimistic musicians on a cheerful yellow background.
