Zurab Tsereteli Studio Museum

About the venue

The manor house, which today houses the Zurab Tsereteli Museum and Workshop is located in the ancient district Gruzinskaya Sloboda. This neighbourhood goes back to the beginning of the 19th century. In 1897 architect Vasily Barkov designed a stone mansion for merchant Vladimir Gorbunov and his wife, who was also a daughter of the first guild merchant and industrialist Vikula Morozov. Later the building got the status of an architectural monument. In 1940-1954 the All-Union Society for Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries (VOKS) was based here, and the mansion was visited by many famous politicians and artists, both Soviet and foreign. In 1993 the building was given to Zurab Tsereteli to set up his own open studio.

At the beginning of the 21st century, the eclectic appearance of the estate was complemented by a modern extension. Brightly coloured sculptures of clowns on the facade gave the ordinary building a festive, fantastical character. The area in front of the mansion, a part of Gruzinskaya Square, turned into an open-air museum. The exposition includes a collection of works by Zurab Tsereteli and a collection of his monumental sculpture in the inner courtyard, along with mosaic and stained-glass compositions. Over 250 works of painting, graphics, enamelling and easel sculpture are displayed on three floors. The dynamic exposition on Bolshaya Gruzinskaya is shaped by the artist himself. In 2021, the museum workshop was reconstructed and re-exhibited – now new works of the artist are available for viewers in the renovated halls of the museum.
