Moscow Museum of Modern Art proudly presents “Reflections”, a solo exhibition of Ilana Raviv showcasing different periods of her oeuvre – from the early 1980’s to the present. This exhibition is the logical continuation of the artist’s monumental large-scale retrospective that took place at the State Russian Museum in Saint-Petersburg in 2007-2008. In this show, Raviv’s works will be on view, and will include works on paper made in different techniques, including acrylic, watercolor, pencil, Indian ink, and bamboo pen and brush.
Ilana Raviv concentrates her attention on the intuitive and spontaneous creation of the image, and almost anything can be the object, including people, animals, still-lives and landscapes. The artist’s diverse use of materials allows her to emphasize the subtle spatial nuances and pictoral half-tones. In her works, Raviv experiments with various types of paper and often combines them with canvas, sculpture, tapestry, cast paper and other objects.
The impulse for Raviv’s creation is always a blazing impression or remembrance. The author’s sensitive perception fills her works with deep psychological context and creates the atmosphere of a confidential dialogue between the artist and the viewer. In Ilana Raviv’s works, implicit memories of the past are mixed with vague anticipations of the future, both mysterious and inevitable.
About the Artist
Ilana Raviv was born in 1945, in Tel-Aviv (Israel). She picked up painting and drawing at a very early age, and pursued it full time after completing her military duty in the Israel Defense Forces. From 1980 to 1984, she studied at the New York Art School “Art Student League” under Roberto Delamonica, Bruce Dorfman, and Knox Martin. To this day her life and creative work have been inextricably linked to the two countries - Israel and the United States. In 2008, the Tel-Aviv City Council praised her contributions to the field of fine arts, awarding her the title of “Woman of the Year in the Arts.” Raviv has had numerous exhibitions in Israel, the USA, Europe and Asia, and currently divides her time between her two studios, one in Neve Tzedek, Tel-Aviv, the other in New York City.
